Check stitch counts

Compare the stitches each row uses with those produced by the previous row. This checks the five supported symbols, not your written instructions, repeats or garment fit.

Chart size & setup

Decrease symbols show the right-side action. On wrong-side rows, use the corresponding purl decrease.

Drag to paint. With the chart focused, use arrow keys to move and Space to paint. Row 1 is at the bottom.

Make a chart from a picture

Turn a clear picture into colourwork, then correct stitches by hand. The picture stays on your device; only the chart is saved.

Measure a washed and dried swatch. Gauge keeps the knitted picture in proportion.

Up to 60 stitches × 80 rows and 4 colours. Simple shapes work best; small details can disappear. Preview first. Use this chart replaces your chart and colours; Undo restores them. Your writing stays.

Worked example

Connect a stitch chart with a gauge calculation

Input: Create a small chart and enter a swatch of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 10 × 10 cm. Calculate a target of 15 × 20 cm.

Result: The gauge calculator gives 30 stitches and 56 rows. Add your yarn, needles and instructions before printing the pattern preview.

Meaning: The calculation scales your measured swatch: 20 ÷ 10 × 15 = 30 stitches; 28 ÷ 10 × 20 = 56 rows.

Remember: Swatch with the actual yarn and needles. Rounded counts may need adjusting to a repeat or shaping. A chart is a design aid, not a tested garment; save a local backup.

A few useful things to know

Where is my pattern saved?

Create a chart and written instructions together. Sign in to save, reopen and share patterns through your online archive.

Does the chart write instructions for me?

No. Create the chart and written instructions side by side, then check that both agree. No automatic garment sizing or grading is provided.

How do I read the chart?

Start at the bottom. Flat knitting alternates right-to-left right-side rows and left-to-right wrong-side rows. In the round, read every row right to left.

Can I print my pattern?

Yes. Print pattern includes the complete chart, stitch legend and all your written instructions. You can also save a PDF using your browser print dialog.

Is this free and private?

Sign in to save your patterns online. VikingTools stores the chart, instructions, title and author in your account. Designs are private until you share them. Anyone with a shared link or embed can view the saved design. Stop sharing or delete the design to disable its public link. Download a backup before deleting your account.
